Where did The Livingroom Sessions begin?

Before The Livingroom Sessions was revived into what is it today, it was a silly little video series I did off of my macbook laptop. While I am immeasurably proud of the leaps and bounds we’ve come, the camera we own, the cinematography and editing of my partner Tafadzwa Michael Chiriga, the goal changing into something far more important… these early sessions have a heart of their own. I’ve changed their title on youtube to “Caits’ Living Room,” as to not confuse viewers, but they are the true Season 1. I’ll be posting them here for fun in between our new episodes. (Speaking of which, keep your eyes peeled next Wednesday!)

My old sessions had often 3-4 videos for each act (aye!) So look for those links, if you’re interested in further viewing. I’ll always post my personal favorite! You can watch the video above of Mario Cancel singing a song he composed to a Langton Hugh’s poem.

Here is the story of the very first “session” ever to be, from an old blog of mine.

So here’s the thing.

Many creative people come through my home, now that I have a home to share that is of the welcoming ilk. I think, why don’t I bring some of the magic that occurs in this space to you? And thus, introducing… Living Room Sessions!

Let’s start, officially, with Mario Cancel of the band Sabananegra. Mario contacted me after meeting my fabulous West Coast fam on their trip to Puerto Rico. Blown away by his music and kind heart, they asked me to connect him to any New York City contacts I could. I’m still working on that part, but the good news is, he’s landed a few gigs and is planning on moving to our hectic-but-lovable city within the next few months! Golden. Tonight he blessed my couch, whipped out his Puetro Rican Cuatro and played me a whole concert. Deeply moved, I asked to record. Please join us by watching the videos below.

Video II: Mario sings an original song in Portuguese.

Video III: Mario plays Vivaldi
